SHORT BIO
Kelly Ickmans is a Postdoctoral Researcher and Assistant Research Professor (OZR-ZAP) at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Brussels, Belgium) and an attending physiotherapist at the University Hospital Brussels (Brussels, Belgium) where she treats adults and children with chronic pain. Dr. Ickmans holds a PhD in Rehabilitation Sciences and Physiotherapy and is co-chair of the international Pain in Motion research group (www.paininmotion.be) where she leads her own line of research on pediatric pain (Pain in Motion kids). The group is internationally recognized for its work on hyperexcitability of the central nervous system (central sensitization) and the effect of Pain Neuroscience Education (PNE) in various chronic pain disorders. Pain in Motion brings together pain researchers from 6 different countries (the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Spain, UK & New Zealand). At the national level, it includes key members affiliated to the universities of Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven and Brussels.
At the age of 30, Kelly has (co-)authored 46 peer-reviewed publications in international journals, including several papers in high impact journals such as Lancet (IF 2014: 45.217), Pain Physician (IF 2011: 10.772), Exercise Immunology Review (IF 2013: 9.929), Journal of Internal Medicine (IF 2013: 5.785), and Journal of Orthopaedic and Sports Physical Therapy (IF 2015: 2.551). She has furthermore published 4 chapters in (inter)national handbooks, served several times as an invited speaker at national and international meetings in 7 different countries, gave several single and 2 day post-academic and refresher courses in different countries over the world, and is currently (co-)supervisor of 9 PhD projects. She is ranked 17th in the world among chronic fatigue syndrome researchers and 42nd among whiplash injury researchers (expertscape.com).
